After Baby Care

After labor and delivery, St. Luke’s Gleeson Center for Mother and Baby offers a comfortable place for Siouxland moms to recover and begin getting acquainted with their baby. One nurse from each shift provides one-on-one care for you and your baby, offering you a resource for all your baby care, feeding and new parent questions. Plus, your nurse will be available to take your baby to the nursery, in case you need some quiet time to rest.

During your stay, your immediate family may visit you and your baby at any time. The room is also set up so  your partner can spend the night with you if you choose.

Remember, Iowa law requires children to be placed in a car seat. A nurse will escort mom and baby to their car upon dismissal to ensure the baby is properly secured in a seat before departure. St. Luke's Partners offer safe, portable seats at wholesale prices for St. Luke's moms. Call Diane Wheeler at (712) 279-3220 for information.

Going Home

St. Luke’s support doesn’t end when you and your baby leave the hospital. While babies don’t come with instructions, we offer free resources to help you once you return home including:

  • An extensive baby care and prevention book to answer questions about caring for yourself after childbirth, feeding your baby and getting your newborn to sleep.
  • My Nurse Call Center, a 24-hour health information service, sponsored by UnityPoint Health. Staffed by registered nurses, My Nurse is a valuable resource for health questions and physician referrals. My Nurse is available by calling
    279-3333 or 1-877-242-8899.
  • Free parenting information through the library at St. Luke’s College.
  • Baby Weigh Clinic, staffed by certified lactation consultants. Funded by St. Luke’s Children’s Miracle Network, the clinic is geared toward breastfeeding mothers and is open on the hospital’s 3rd floor every Monday from 1 pm to 7 pm.
