St. Luke’s College Receives National Award

The Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) has announced the winners of the 2013 CHEA Award for Outstanding Institutional Practice in Student Learning Outcomes. St. Luke’s College in Sioux City, Iowa, was one of four institutions receiving the 2013 award. Other award winners include Drake University - in Des Moines, Iowa; Harold Washington College - Chicago, Illinois; and University of Wisconsin - La Crosse. Awards were presented January 29 at a ceremony during the 2013 CHEA Annual Conference in Washington, DC.

The CHEA Award was established in 2005 to recognize institutions that have been exceptional in developing and applying evidence of student learning outcomes to improve higher education quality and accountability. A committee selected from higher education institutions, accrediting organizations and the public judged the entries based on the following four award criteria: 1. Articulation and evidence of outcomes 2. Success with regard to outcomes 3. Information to the public about outcomes 4. Use of outcomes for educational improvements. “These four institutions and programs provide excellent examples of effective approaches to the use of student learning outcomes,” said CHEA President Judith Eaton. “Information about outstanding practices can help other colleges and universities seeking to make gains in this important area.”

St. Luke’s College is proud to be recognized for its efforts in developing specific learning outcomes and providing an appropriate environment for students to achieve these goals. “St. Luke’s College has a strong track record in licensure passage rates that demonstrates our commitment to student learning” said Chief Academic Officer Dr. Richard Ayi. “The College’s objective is to provide optimal learning experiences for graduates to successfully pass their licensure and certification examinations. CHEA recognizes that we have been able to develop and publicly commit to specific student learning outcomes in our degree programs in nursing, respiratory care and radiology, as well as our certificate programs in medical laboratory science and phlebotomy.”

The CHEA Award recognizes St. Luke’s College’s development of specific evidence-based, student learning outcomes. St. Luke’s College outcomes are based on a three-year average with more than 94% of graduates passing the registry examinations on the first attempt.
