Safe Haven
Iowa’s Safe Haven Act is a law that allows parents or someone with the parent’s authority to leave an infant, up to 14 days old, at a hospital or healthcare facility without being charged with abandonment. St. Luke's Health System in Sioux City, Iowa is a Safe Haven Hospital. If hospital staff sees a person leaving an infant, they may ask a few questions such as information about the infant’s medical history and parent’s medical history. No questions have to be answered however, and all information is kept confidential.
